For Malaysian investors

Anyone can build a million ringgit. The hard part is not the amount.

It is the years. A 35-year-old needs about RM671 a month to reach a million by 65. A 45-year-old needs RM1,698 for the same finish. Those ten years cost more than any fund choice ever will.

Work out your own runway

Move the two sliders. The first is your age today, the second is what you could commit every month without feeling it too much. Nothing is sent anywhere — the sums happen inside your own browser.

What you would have
Your own money: What time added:

Compounded monthly at the rate you picked, before tax and before charges. A return assumption is not a promise — real returns arrive unevenly and some years are negative. This is an illustration to size a decision, not a projection of any particular fund.

Read it the other way round and it becomes obvious. Same target, same assumed return, and the only thing that changes is the age you start:

Monthly amount needed to reach RM1,000,000 by age 65, at the assumed annual return shown, compounded monthly. Illustration only.

At 8% a year, the 35-year-old paying RM671 a month puts in RM241,552 of their own money over thirty years. The other RM758,448 is not skill and it is not luck. It is time — and it is the only part of this that cannot be bought later.

Two jobs. The plan does one. I do the other.

The plan decides when. I decide where.

The engine

A fixed sum, every month, automatically

Eastspring calls it RICh. The same amount leaves your account on the same day each month and is invested whether that week's news is good or frightening. You feel it for about two months, then you forget it exists.

It removes the question of when by never asking it. That matters more than it sounds — it is the one decision my own research found investors get nothing for.

The steering

Which fund, which sector, which country

That monthly money still has to buy something. Thirteen years of macro reading and chart work go into deciding what: which Eastspring funds, weighted towards which regions and sectors, and when that mix should change.

I am not trying to call the top or the bottom. I am making sure the money is pointed at the right thing while it compounds.

Those are genuinely different questions, and you should know which one I am answering. Timing is when you put money in. Allocation is where it sits. My own research killed the first one. The second is the job.

Why believe any of this

Because I test my own advice in public, and publish it when it fails. Every number below links to the study it came from.

What it costs when it goes against you

The part nobody puts on a brochure

You will watch it fall. In a bad stretch you may see roughly 60 sen back for every ringgit you put in, and it can sit there for a few years. Your statement will look like a mistake you made.

That discomfort is not a flaw in the plan. It is the price of the return, and nobody — not me, not any consultant — can take it away for you.

The plan only works if the monthly debit keeps going through exactly those years. Nobody who cancelled when it hurt collected the number at the top of this page. If you already know you would stop, tell me on the first call and we will start smaller, so that you do not.

What you pay, and what you get for it

I am a licensed consultant, not a free service. Unit trust funds carry a sales charge on each contribution and an annual management fee inside the fund. Both are set out in the fund's prospectus and product highlights sheet.

You will know the exact charge on your plan before you invest — from me, in plain ringgit, not worked backwards off a statement months later.

What that buys, beyond the transaction:

Who this is for

Malaysian professionals who want to understand why their money sits where it sits: an active EPF account and an interest in EPF Member Investment Scheme investing, a horizon of five years or longer, and the temperament to keep going through a bad stretch.

Start where you can. Most clients begin somewhere between RM500 and RM2,000 a month, and many add a lump sum later. If you also have RM50,000 or more sitting outside EPF, there is more to plan and we should talk about both.

If you want hot tips, whichever fund is up the most this year, or someone who will tell you to buy whatever is trending — I am not your guy. There are plenty of consultants in Malaysia who will do that. I will not, and my own published research is the reason why.
